Practice Makes Purrfect by Tonya Hall

Blog post by Tonya Hall 7/24/19 Where would I be without cats? I don’t want to know! As far back as I can remember, I have been a Crazy Cat Lady in training! Every cat I’ve owned still holds a special place in my heart for they all have given me way more than I could’ve ever imagined.

Me as a child with my cat.

I learned to hand sew in my 8thgrade Home and Careers class. Little did I know that this would become a lifelong hobby! After high school, I borrowed my dad’s old sewing machine and taught myself how to use it. (Unfortunately, he never got the machine back!) A few years later, I learned how to quilt. As much as I loved it, I quickly realized how expensive and how long of a process making a quilt really was! After a few years of trying to sell quilted items at craft fairs, I was ready to throw in the towel. Then I had a lightbulb go off in my head – why not combine everything I love into a single hobby/business? Cats, fabric, sewing, packaging, craft fairs – voila! The Spicy Purrito was born! For the past three years, I have thoroughly enjoyed working on my cat items! Every craft fair consists of exchanging stories with my customers about our feline friends, talking about my products, and just having an absolute blast! I am humbled and blessed that I have made so many connections with people – from my customers, to fellow crafters – and they have helped my business grow and succeed.I have also been able to donate gift baskets and some of my proceeds to helping local animal rescue groups and shelters. There is no better feeling than to have a sense of purpose, to be able to do what you love creatively, and to be able to help others while doing it. To be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor with developing a business out of your art, is just the icing on the cake.
